Answer:
1. Fill out an application. Indicate what your disability date is. That is, when did you become disabled. That's the date you get backpay from.

2. Gather as many medical records as possible. The more you have, the better your chance of getting approved.

3. Send in the application and medical reports.

4. Expect to get a denial letter in the mail within 90 days. But don't be discouraged and don't give up.

5. Take your denial letter to a Social Security attorney and fill out more paperwork. The attorney will file for a court hearing and the judge will review all your medical records prior to making his decision.

6. All this time, keep going to the doctor to gain more medical records. Social Security will send you to their doctor to be interviewed and you will more than likely be denied again.

7. The attorney will keep on appealing the decision until it gets approved.

Without an attorney or several medical records, you won't have much of a chance of getting approved.

It took me 3 years to get approved for SSDI and I got a backpay check for over $40,000. I had to pay my attorney $4,000 of that. I had to stay in homeless shelters during that 3 years because I couldn't work but it was worth it in the end.

Don't make the mistake a lot of people do by going through the process without an attorney. You won't likely get approved. And most importantly, don't give up. The longer it takes, the more backpay you get. Good Luck!
Seek help from a professional because you will need to be evaluated by a mental health professional.
if your doctor says no, then you can't.
U can call 411 or look in ur local phone book for the SSI office in ur neighborhood, u must go in. When u go u will need ur birth certificate, proof of address doctors evaluations, proof of prior income, u basically have to bring ur whole history with u, it takes a long time but once ur info is in, u only have to renew about 2times a year. remember that SSI isnt a lot of money so u might have to look 4 other options -nay
You need to get your doctor and the social security doctor to say yes - first talk to your psychiatrist. And you would be on SSDI not SSI.
It is a long process to apply for SSI. You got to call Social Security Administration and get the application. Then you need to mail it back and wait. Have plenty of proof in regards to your disability and limitations. It can take anywhere between 4-6 months for a decision to be made.
You must first visit the doctor and get your medical records. Then, go to your local DSS office with your records as well as your income and expenses information. You must be both ill and poor to qualify for SSI. Once DSS gets your file, they will handle your case for SSI and they will ask for more paperwork if needed. It is possible that SSI could take a while to come, but they have other programs in place to help you if you qualify.
You have to apply and you can do this online. Start now...takes awhile and often they turn you down the first time and you need to reapply.
They will pull all your medical records and review these also.
It takes awhile. So, please do not, if they respond with a no-just keep appealing it. Don't reapply each time denied. Honest.
First, make an appt. with Social Sec. office in your local area. You will need to call the national 1-800 number to make the appt.
You will need your birth certificate, soc. sec. card, photo id. The office will have someone go over the application with you, wanting to know when this started, etc.
It would help to have a request from your dr., however, they will also schedule an appt. for you to meet with one of their physicians, and psychologists for an evaluation as well. It would also help to have a lst of the current meds you are on-and the dose.
As I mentioned before, DO NOT reapply every time you gt denied. KEEP Appealing the decision. When it comes (if it comes) to the point of a hearing, get an attorney who specializes in SSI cases. Their fee will be 1/4 of the amount of the lump sum you will get when you win.
Do you currently get counseling for your panic attacks, etc.? . If not, get going on it asap. That will help. They will look at your medical records, and counseling records as well.
Keep on going for it. I wish you the best. Take care.
